‘Given me an opportunity’ – Winks on his improved Spurs form under Conte

Harry Winks has insisted that his style of play at Tottenham has not changed under Antonio Conte and puts any improvement down to being given more opportunities.

Winks played the full 90 minutes of Tottenham’s 1-1 draw with Southampton – coming into the side in place of Oliver Skipp.

Despite a couple of momentary lapses of concentration, the 25-year-old looked to mirror his performance against Liverpool earlier this month by dictating the tempo in midfield.

He also provided an excellent assist for Harry Kane early into the second half against the Saints, but was denied the tally with the goal ruled out for a marginal offside.

The newfound confidence from Winks has almost proved to be a U-turn on his Spurs career, which seemed in doubt not long ago due to a reduced amount of game time and uninspiring performances when given rare chances on the pitch.

However, when asked if Spurs boss Conte had altered his role and what was expected of him, Winks played down any alterations and said it was simply due to the Italian offering him more minutes.

He told Amazon Prime (December 28): “Nothing. He’s just given me an opportunity, he’s given me game time, a chance to go out there and prove myself and leave it down to me.

“It’s nice to be part of the team again and get some minutes and play, but you can see the disappointment when you come away from the result today and we should have won this.”

Conte has been good at getting the best out of some of the club’s struggling players, and Winks appears to be one that is starting to benefit from his arrival.

Obviously, he has a bit of a way to go to cement a spot in the team, but some of his performances have been better and much more convincing.
