‘Go and get him’ – Ex-Spurs star suggests fans would love Levy to sign midfielder

Former Tottenham Hotspur star Jermaine Jenas has told FourFourTwo that he sympathises with the fans who are growing increasingly frustrated by the way the club is being run.

Jenas joined Spurs back in 2005 and made 202 appearances for the club (Transfermarkt). He was also a part of the side that won Tottenham’s last trophy, lifting the League Cup in 2008.

Since then, the Lilywhites have come close to winning silverware on a couple of occasions, losing in the Champions League final in 2019, and the League Cup final in 2021.

In that time without a trophy, Spurs have built a brand new, state-of-the-art stadium which is regarded as one of the finest sporting venues in the world.

While the club has grown commercially, fans are becoming angrier and angrier at a perceived lack of ambition from the owners.

This disillusionment has intensified over the course of this season, with fans believing positive steps were not taken to build on last year’s impressive fourth-place finish.

Jenas admits he can see where fans are coming from, and claims that everything Tottenham do is half-hearted.

He said: “I sympathise with the fans to an extent.

“I totally get the standpoint of ‘What’s the point in building this big stadium and having all this lovely stuff if you’re not going to invest properly and challenge for a league title?’ I think the frustration from the fans is that they seem to just half-heart everything.

“It’s like, are they ever going to get to a window, like this summer and go, ‘You know what? We need James Maddison: go and get him. We need a top goalkeeper, let’s go and compete for one.’ That never seems to happen.

“It’s always half-hearted and I think that’s where the frustration lies. You’re here now, so go: you’re very close but you’re not prepared to take that next step.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It does very much feel like Spurs have been incredibly close to finally unlocking something special, and then we take two steps backwards.

It happened with Pochettino after the Champions League final, and it’s happening again with Conte now.

All we want is one transfer window where we show the kind of ambition that will solve all the problems in the squad and allow the team to push on and compete at the very top.
