‘Go to Italy please’ – Chelsea legend urges Willian to snub Spurs move

Chelsea legend Dennis Wise has urged Willian to snub a potential switch to Tottenham Hotspur or Arsenal in favour of a move to Serie A.

Willian has arguably been one of Chelsea’s best players since the Premier League’s restart but the winger appears to be on his way out of Stamford Bridge when his contract runs out in the summer (Football.London).

Tottenham have been established as the favourites to land the Brazilian when he becomes a free agent in the summer (Mundo Deportivo) while Arsenal are also said to be keen on snapping him up (Telegraph).

It was even claimed that the Gunners were willing to offer the 31-year-old a £250,000-a-week deal before the pandemic struck, in order to beat the likes of Spurs to his signature (The Mirror).

Willian’s agent, Kia Joorabchian, has insisted that the winger has not held talks with Spurs or any other club regarding a summer move (The Sun).

Wise admitted that he would be disappointed to see Willian leave after seven impressive seasons at Chelsea and urged the winger to go to Italy instead of joining a direct rival.

When asked which Premier League team he sees the wide man joining in the summer, the former Blues midfielder told Stadium Astro (as relayed by Football.London): “Well I wouldn’t want him to go to any of them.

“I’ve got to say that because it would be competition for Chelsea. Go to Italy please Willian, go away.

“He would be a fit for anyone, at Arsenal and teams like that, I think he’d be a wonderful fit for them.

“That’s the sad thing about it that we’ll let him go to an opposition that wants to compete and we have to replace him.

“I think we have replaced him but we will want a lot more but we will be depending on only two when you want more.

“I think Pedro’s going to go as well so we’re going to lose two wide men, which would be disappointing to lose him as well.

“So when you look at it and at the quality that’s going, we’ve got to look then at quality that’s got to come in.

“I would love Chelsea to keep him but I think Chelsea look at this point of view of his age, I think that comes into the equation.

They look at the age of him, yes they would probably extend it by a year, they probably won’t give him three.

“And this is why he’s probably got an opportunity elsewhere to take a longer contract. It will be disappointing because I’ve got to say, he’s had some wonderful years at Chelsea and he’s a quality player.

“He’s still got so much ability to give. It will be sad to see him go.”

Spurs Web Opinion

With Chelsea already snapping up Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner, and seemingly desperate to sign Kai Havertz, it seems extremely unlikely that Willian is going to be offered a new deal. Given that the Brazilian is available on a free, Spurs could view the opportunity to snap him up this summer as too good to turn down.
