Gold reveals Mourinho believes £25m Spurs player has similarities with Chelsea legend

Alasdair Gold has revealed that Jose Mourinho believes Ryan Sessegnon can become Tottenham’s first-choice left-back in the future but does not consider the youngster to be ready yet for a regular place in the side.

Sessegnon did not have the best of starts to his Spurs career after arriving from Fulham last summer when a hamstring injury saw him miss the start of the season.

However, since returning to full fitness, the 20-year-old has seen several opportunities come his way, particularly since the arrival of Jose Mourinho to North London.

The England Under-21 international has been used as a traditional left-back, a wing-back as well as an out and out winger by the Spurs head coach so far.

However, Gold has revealed that the Portuguese coach sees him as a left-back in the future and believes he shares similarities with Ashley Cole, who he managed at Chelsea.

When asked by a fan during a Q and A if there is any chance that Sessegnon could be loaned out by Tottenham next season, Gold said on Football.London: “Mourinho likes him and wanted him at United. For now it’s about building him up & working on his defensive skills.

“Mourinho told me he sees him as a terrific future left-back, with similar traits to Ashley Cole, but he’s not ready yet.

“It’s telling that he looks to have bulked up during lockdown which will aid his development.

“I’d be surprised if he’s loaned out a year after being bought for £30m.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Sessegnon certainly has wonderful physical attributes as well as a really strong mentality. He seems determined to keep improving his game and I can see why Jose believes he can mould him into a top left-back.

However, there are still major question marks as far as his technique is concerned. He does not seem good enough to receive the ball and play himself out of tight spaces but perhaps that will come with more experience under his belt.
