Heurelho gomes has claimed the victory over Wigan was the perfect way in which to kick-off an important week for Spurs.

Jermain Defoe and a brace for Roman Pavlyuchenko secured all three points in a 3-0 victory at the DW Stadium, moving Spurs back into fourth position.

Tottenham now host Bolton in the FA Cup fifth round replay, before Everton arrive at White Hart Lane on Sunday in what is a testing week.

Gomes was barely tested by Wigan, but feels that this will be a telling week in how Spurs’ season pans out, so the win over Wigan was of vital importance.

“It was a very important win for us,” Gomes told the Tottenham Hotspur official website. “It’s a big week, with Wigan, Bolton and Everton and when you win the first game like we did at Wigan, it gives you a great feeling.

“It’s not an easy place to go, conditions were difficult, but we were strong in every tackle, kept winning the ball and deserved the win.”

Gomes was also full of praise for the defence after Spurs secured their 12th clean sheet of the season.

“It wasn’t easy in those condtions. Normally the ball will bounce and come straight to you, but this time when the ball bounced in front of you, anything could happen. It was all about concentration.

“We defended well again and it’s important for us to keep another clean sheet. To play away from home and keep a clean sheet is always a fantastic feeling.”

Gomes has called on the team to keep up these levels of concentration and competitiveness for the visit of Bolton.

“We know this will be a difficult game. We didn’t play well in the first half at Bolton, but we played very well in the second half.

“We need to keep going now. We are in a great position and we need to try and progress further.”
