‘Gone backwards’ – Rio Ferdinand calls for key decision to be made at Tottenham

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has insisted that Harry Kane needs to clarify where he stands in terms of his future at Tottenham Hotspur.

Kane is enjoying a brilliant season with Tottenham, having scored 22 goals already, 20 of which have been in the Premier League (Transfermarkt). Despite a strong personal campaign, this will be another year without a trophy for Kane and Spurs.

The striker was named on the bench for Tottenham’s FA Cup defeat at Sheffield United and also saw their hopes of progressing in the Champions League ended by AC Milan within the space of a week.

The 29-year-old’s current contract expires in the summer of 2024 and there is already speculation over his future at the club.

Manchester United have repeatedly been linked with the England captain, and it is thought Erik ten Hag sees Kane as his priority target for this upcoming summer transfer window (Manchester Evening News).

However, Tottenham are thought to be determined to reach an agreement with Kane that would see him extend his stay at the club (The Athletic). The situation, according to Ferdinand, needs to be cleared up one way or another and soon.

Ferdinand told his Five YouTube channel: “If you play football as a young kid, what is your goal? To win trophies. That doesn’t change as you get older, you want to win trophies, if you can. Not everyone has the opportunity because they don’t play for the right clubs, then you start changing your goals.”

“He is at Spurs, who want to win trophies. They can’t, they don’t. Since the Champions League final, they have gone backwards in terms of the way they are playing and closeness to winning things. They are nowhere near it,” Ferdinand added.

On Kane’s future, Ferdinand had some demands: “But you have to ask him the question, that is the questioning we need answering from him. Tell us man, ‘I want to be a one club man, I want to have the statue outside, I’m Mr Spurs’. We will all say, ‘well played, that’s fine.’ But there is a chance to come here now, to Man United.”

“I would love him to, but the problem you have got is [Daniel] Levy – what price is he going to ask for?”

It would be great to hear what Kane’s thoughts are on his future, but I am pretty sure he doesn’t quite know until we get to the end of the season.

If Spurs finish in the top four, I cannot see him leaving, but if the club fail to qualify for the Champions League, or if the managerial situation is a mess, he will likely want to leave.
