‘Got away with it’ – Pundit left unconvinced by Spurs display despite 4-0 win

Graeme Souness has claimed Tottenham ‘got away with it’ after they secured a 4-0 win over Aston Villa on Saturday evening.

Spurs extended their lead in fourth-place over Arsenal to three points after blowing away Steven Gerrard’s side in the second half, with Heung-min Son notching his sixth career hat-trick.

Despite taking an early lead through Son, the three points did not come easy for Antonio Conte’s men at Villa Park with the hosts piling on relentless pressure in the first period and forcing Hugo Lloris into a number of crucial stops.

However, Tottenham rallied to score three goals after the break to take the sting out of Villa and extend their winning streak to four games in the Premier League, scoring 14 goals in the process.

But the North London outfit’s display did not convince Souness, who felt the scoreline did not match how things played out on the pitch.

He said (via Sky Sports – 09/04/22 from 19:30 onwards): “For me they got away with it today. You look at that result tomorrow and think, ‘4-0, that was a stroll for them’.

“They got away with it in the first half. They rode their luck. The stats, if you forget the most important one four goals against, you look at all the other stats and think that Villa have won that game.”

However, Souness did hail Tottenham’s resilience as they braved the onslaught of Villa pressure in the first half on route to a key win.

He added: “But this is a resilient Tottenham. We saw it when they went to Man City, got their goals on the break as they did in the second half today.

“They’re better organised, they’re playing with a lot more fire in their body.”

Given how things panned out in the first half, plus the Arsenal result, this is a huge win for Tottenham and has kept their momentum going.

They did ride their luck at times and had to be bailed out by their goalkeeper, but they rallied and steadied the ship after the break to earn three points in style.
