‘Got us confused with Spurs’ – Arsenal icon aims trophy dig at North London rivals

Ian Wright has taken a subtle dig at Tottenham when being asked what winning the League Cup would mean to Arsenal this season.

Both North London clubs were gearing up for the quarter-finals of the competition this week, with the Gunners demolishing League One side Sunderland while Tottenham are due to welcome West Ham.

This season’s edition is set to see fresh champions, with four-in-a-row winners Manchester City crashing out in the Fourth Round back in October.

Presenter Manish Bhasin quizzed ex-Arsenal striker Wright whether the opportunity of advancing to the latter stages of the competition would be a good chance for the young players at his former side to gain confidence.

However, the 58-year-old mentioned that a lot of the youngsters have been involved with the squad when it has won silverware before and joked the host was getting Arsenal confused with Spurs.

Bhasin said on Premier League Productions: “They have a League Cup tie against Sunderland, in the quarter-finals. There are no holders in Manchester City in the tie, at this stage now.

“Is this a good chance for these youngsters to get a step closer to some silverware just for their confidence?”

Wright then responded: “You say that, but a lot of these guys have been involved with Arsenal when they have won stuff.

“You might have got us confused with Spurs there, for a second. If these bunch of guys can do something together and then continue to stay in the top four. Of course, that’s what Arsenal need.”

If an opportunity to poke fun at Spurs is there for a person with Arsenal links, then it is always going to be taken. Hopefully, Antonio Conte can be the man to lead the club to long-awaited silverware to finally bring an end to the drought.
