Graeme Souness explains the only way Spurs can finish above Man City this season

Graeme Souness has claimed that the only way the Premier League chasing pack which includes Tottenham Hotspur have of toppling Manchester City come the end of the season would be as a result of an injury crisis.

The current Premier League champions were victors once again yesterday having comfortably swept aside Southampton 4-0 at the Etihad Stadium which saw Erling Haaland net his fifteenth top flight goal in the first nine outings of the new campaign (transfermarkt).

Tottenham did their bit yesterday evening to try and keep within touching distance of Pep Guardiola’s side after Harry Kane’s header gave them a 1-0 win at Brighton to take them to within three points of the table toppers.

The north Londoners were due to face City in Manchester last month, only for the game to be postponed following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

Souness told Sky Sports: “They are only challengers if City have an absolute nightmare run with injuries, and I think that applies to everyone else behind City.

“I think people are playing for second place if City don’t have a disaster with injuries, that is how good they are.”

On current form City look largely unstoppable. Tottenham have enjoyed a good record against Guardiola’s side in recent seasons, however, the addition of Haaland has certainly made them an even deadlier threat.

A successful season for Tottenham would be to push City all the way for the title and also pick up some domestic silverware in the process.
