Graeme Souness gives his verdict on Tottenham’s title hopes

Graeme Souness has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are only fighting for second place as he expects Manchester City to walk the Premier League title this season.

Spurs have come in for plenty of criticism for their style of play over the past week (talkSPORT) after they lost the North London derby and failed to break down Eintracht Frankfurt on Tuesday.

However, amidst extremely hard circumstances on Saturday, just days after the sudden passing of Gian Pierro Ventrone, the Lilywhites showed plenty of fight to grind out a 1-0 win at the Amex Stadium.

The result means that Antonio Conte’s men have won six and drawn two of their nine Premier League games so far this season.

However, Souness believes neither Spurs nor any other team is capable of challenging Pep Guardiola’s men unless they are ravaged by injuries.

The pundit said about Tottenham to Sky Sports 08/10/22 (as relayed by The Daily Mail): “They are only challengers is City have an absolute nightmare run with injuries, and I think that applies to everyone else behind City.

“I think people are playing for second place if City don’t have a disaster with injuries, that is how good they are.”

However, Souness was complimentary about the fight Spurs showed against the Seagulls and insisted that Conte will be over the moon with his side’s display.

The former Liverpool midfielder added: “I think he [Conte] will be delighted with today, you know I have lived and worked and played in Italy their mentality is quite different to ours and he will see digging a result out today as a really good weeks work after a death of one of their group.

“They showed a bit of steel again, this is why they are quite different under this manager. He is a manager that you will fall out with, he is a manager that pushes the players all the way to the line and I think he gets the most out of players.

“I think he is a great man for that job and I think Spurs can be feisty now and dig in to get results.”

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no doubt that adding a pure goalscorer like Haaland has taken City to another level, and so, it is difficult to see any team keeping pace with them for the rest of the season. However, I still do not see any reason why Spurs cannot finish second this season.
