Graeme Souness names Spurs star who was ‘caught napping’ against Newcastle

Spurs fans were left extremely disappointed with the lilywhites’ performance against Newcastle on Sunday with the away side registering a shock victory against Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

Tottenham came into the game as heavy favourites considering that the Magpies were yet to register a point this season, only for Steve Bruce’s side put in a defensive masterclass to walk away with all three points.

Spurs struggled to create clear cut chances throughout the game and former Liverpool manager Graeme Souness has criticised the hom side for their inability to fashion clear cut chances.

He claimed that various Premier League teams will now employ similar tactics against Spurs which Newcastle did on Sunday.

Speaking to Sky Sports Super Sunday on 25/8/19 Souness said (as reported by Football.London): “Prior to Newcastle scoring, the 38th minute was the first time Tottenham had a shot on goal. Newcastle were rigid and the whole team put a shift in.

“Spurs had 80 per cent possession but only two shots on target. That is not good enough. That’s the way teams will try and play against Tottenham now.”

The 66-year-old was also quite critical of Rose’s failure to come around on the cover for Joelinton’s goal after Davinson Sanchez got caught out of position.

He added: “Danny Rose was caught napping for the first goal and he should have cleaned that up.

“He should have realised that (Davinson) Sanchez had lost Joelinton and he should have come in and got a block in.”

Spurs Web Opinion

So far none of the three performances from Spurs this season have been anywhere near convincing. The result is certainly not an ideal one ahead of a North London Derby. Let’s hope that this is just a minor blip and that the team starts to build some momentum after the European transfer window shuts.
