Graham Roberts calls for Antonio Conte to make change at right wing-back

Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Graham Roberts has called for Antonio Conte to start Djed Spence at right wing-back.

Tottenham moved to sign Spence during the summer transfer window in a deal worth up to £20m from Middlesbrough (Sky Sports).

The England Under-21 international impressed on loan at Nottingham Forest having played a key role in helping Steve Cooper’s side to secure promotion back to the Premier League.

Roberts, who won the FA Cup and UEFA Cup during his playing career at Tottenham took to Twitter soon after Tottenham’s disappointing 3-1 north London derby defeat to Arsenal yesterday afternoon.

Spurs boss Antonio Conte opted once again to start Emerson Royal on the right side of his defence with the Brazilian having been shown a straight red card in the second half following a challenge on Gabriel Martinelli.

Royal will now miss Tottenham’s next three Premier League matches which will see him sit out the trip to Brighton, the visit of Everton and the clash at Old Trafford against Manchester United.

Royal’s suspension is likely to see Matt Doherty come into the side rather than Spence, given Doherty’s previous form last season before his injury.

Conte has previously referred to Spence as a signing the club had made and is likely to continue on the bench and provide cover for the Republic of Ireland international.
