Graham Roberts claims Spurs international ‘looks lost’ calls for other player to start

Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Graham Roberts has called for Japhet Tanganga to start at right-back ahead of Emerson Royal.

Tottenham paid €25million (£21.4million) to land the Brazilian international from Barcelona on the final day of the summer transfer window.

Royal made his debut for the North Londoners in the 3-0 Premier League defeat to Crystal Palace where he experienced a baptism of fire to life in England when he came up against Wilfried Zaha and was once again selected by Nuno Espirito Santo for the loss at home to Chelsea.

Roberts believes that the 22-year-old looks ‘lost’ following his departure from the Nou Camp.

He told Football FanCast: “I think the right back who’s come in looks lost at the moment, I think Tanganga has to get back in there.”

It is far too early to start casting a verdict on the Brazilian given the limited time he has had at his new club, along with the adaptation of a new culture and the language barrier.

He needs to be given a full season before we can judge whether he has been a shrewd signing, and considering that the other option is Matt Doherty – we’ve nothing to lose.
