Graham Roberts sends message to Toby Alderweireld ahead of Watford match

While there are many aspects of Tottenham’s recent performances that have been worrying, perhaps the most alarming element has been the complete lack of defensive solidarity.

The Lilywhites have only kept two clean sheets in all competitions so far this season and have found it next to impossible to hold on to leads.

While Spurs’ experienced duo, Jan Vertonghen, and Toby Alderweireld have copped their fair share of the blame for the team’s poor defensive displays, the pair enjoyed pretty much a perfect week on international duty with Belgium.

Both defenders were back to their usual best as the Red Devils steamrolled San Marino 9-0 at home before putting up a gritty display to beat Kazakhstan 2-0 on the road.

Alderweireld was clearly pleased with his week and took to social media to post a message that read, “2 games, 11 goals, 2 clean sheets, 100% win rate”.

Former Spurs defender Graham Roberts responded to the Belgian’s message and pleaded him to keep a clean sheet when Tottenham return to Premier League action against Watford on Saturday in what is a hugely important game for the North London side.

With their confidence likely shot to bits after letting in 10 goals in two games, the international break will probably help the likes of Vertonghen and Alderweireld regain some of that lost confidence. One just hopes that the players will carry the momentum through to the game against Watford as anything other than a win in that game will do nothing to ease the negativity around the club.
