Great boost for Tottenham after star player exit rumours – looks like he will now stay

All indications now point towards Toby Alderweireld staying at Spurs for at least another season, after his £25m release clause officially expired last night (Sun).

Tottenham Hotspur chose to extend the Belgian centre-back’s contract by an extra year in early January, however, this triggered a clause in the deal.

This clause would allow Toby to leave the club this summer if a bid of £25m was made more than two weeks before the start of the new Premier League season (Guardian).

Roma and Spurs were apparently in talks over a potential deal earlier this month, but nothing came of the meetings between the two clubs (Sky Sports).

Reports have suggested that now the release clause is done and dusted, Levy would charge £40m for the defender, instead of the £25m it was just 24 hours ago (Telegraph).

It seems impossible that any club would have let that clause run down only to come in and buy him at an inflated price now.

Spurs Web Opinion:

In my opinion, Toby is here to stay for another 12 months, but Spurs need to tie him down to another extension as soon as possible. I believe he has three more years left in him at least.
