Guglielmo Vicario has now penned an apology letter for the gestures he made towards the travelling Tottenham fans at Alkmaar, which caused a huge stir on social media.
The Tottenham players went over to the travelling section after the final whistle to thank them for their support and the Spurs number one gave a rather curious reaction when the players were met with a hostile reception.
Some Spurs fans were angered when Vicario attempted to rally the away section, motioning them for more support after the 1-0 loss.
Ange Postecoglou came out in defence of Guglielmo Vicario, insisting that the Italian shot-stopper always wants to best for the club and that he was merely trying to bring people together.

Guglielmo Vicario says he wants Tottenham to stay united
Vicario has now taken to social media to apologise to Spurs fans for the performance and assure them that he and his teammates will fight hard to turn the result around in the second leg.
The 28-year-old also spoke about his controversial post-match gesture, clarifying that he was merely suggesting that everyone at the club be united. The Italy International also issued an apology to anyone he had offended.
Guglielmo Vicario wrote on Instagram: ‘As a team, we take full responsibility for our terrible performance on the pitch last night. We will work even harder to understand, as a mature group, what went wrong.
‘Still, we have a great opportunity, starting from Sunday, to redeem ourselves and prepare in the best way possible for the second battle next Thursday.
‘Regarding what happened at the final whistle in front of the away section, I want to clarify my intention to keep everyone as united as possible, even in the disappointment we have caused our people.
‘If I have offended anyone, I apologise to those who felt affected. Post-match emotions can be misunderstood, but I assure you that my commitment to this team and you, our fans, grows stronger day after day.’
The Vicario incident has been overblown
The Tottenham Hotspur fans who had travelled to Alkmaar were well within the rights to jeer the team if they felt the performance and application was not good enough.
One can understand why some of them would have been upset at Vicario’s demands that the fans get behind the team.
However, the Tottenham number one certainly did not go overboard and did not cross any line, which is why this apology was not necessary.
