Guglielmo Vicario pulls out of Italy squad with injury as Tottenham await update

Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has withdrawn from international duty with Italy due to an unspecified injury.

For Tottenham Hotspur, the 2024/25 season has ended, and it concluded in the best possible way, with the club lifting a major trophy for the first time in 17 years after a gritty 1-0 win over Manchester United in the Europa League final.

As for the players, they will now take a short break before joining their respective national teams for a series of World Cup qualifying matches in June, ahead of pre-season preparations.

Several Tottenham players have received international call-ups and will be travelling across the globe to represent their countries, but one key man has now pulled out of his national squad.

Guglielmo Vicario withdraws from Italy squad through injury

It has been revealed by Corriere dello Sport that Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario will miss Italy’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Norway and Moldova due to injury.

Vicario had been called up to the national team last week by manager Luciano Spalletti, with Italy set to face Norway away and Moldova at home in two crucial qualifiers.

However, the Spurs’ number one has now withdrawn from the squad and will be replaced by Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi.

Vicario expected back at Tottenham for assessment

A statement from the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) confirmed Vicario’s withdrawal and the decision to bring in Carnesecchi, but offered little in terms of detail regarding the nature of the injury.

They noted: “Following the imminent unavailability for reasons of a physical nature of the goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, the technical commissioner Luciano Spalletti has summoned the footballer Marco Carnesecchi (Atalanta) for the rally scheduled for Saturday, May 31 that will precede the two commitments of the national team against Norway and Moldova.”

Vicario is now expected to return to Hotspur Way for further medical checks, with Spurs hoping the issue is not serious, particularly as preparations for the next campaign begin, where Ange Postecoglou will want a fully fit squad ready to hit the ground running.
