Guglielmo Vicario reveals how he would feel if Tottenham fans boo him again

Guglielmo Vicario has spoken about the boos he received from Tottenham fans during the North London club’s defeat to Fulham two weeks ago.

Spurs fans repeatedly booed Vicario after the goalkeeper’s mistake led to Fulham’s second goal, and they even cheered him ironically when he made saves in that game subsequently.

Thomas Frank labelled the Tottenham fans booing their own player as ‘unacceptable’, even stating that those who jeered the goalkeeper are not true Spurs fans.

There have been rumours in the Italian press that Vicario could decide to leave Spurs due to the behaviour of the club’s supporters, but the former Empoli man has now set the record straight.

Guglielmo Vicario is unaffected by Tottenham’s boo boys

Following the controversy against Fulham, the travelling Tottenham fans to St James’ Park sang Vicario’s name throughout the game to express their support for the goalkeeper.

The 29-year-old has now insisted that he is not affected much by boos or praises, insisting that he remains balanced after both good and bad performances.

When asked about the booing from the fans, the goalkeeper told TNT Sports: “It happens to all professional sportspeople – when you do good things, you are the best. When you make mistakes, you are not the best.

“I’m 29 years old, so I will have a few more years left. I’m happy when the fans cheer for me, but I’m aware when I make a mistake or have a good game. I’m just trying to stay balanced, that’s my personality.”

When asked if Frank spoke to him about the booing, the Spurs number one responded: “We didn’t speak, but I know the gaffer is by my side. I can thank him for what he said; it’s part of football. I’m a big man, and I can handle these things. They are part of the game, and we move on.”

Vicario has been one of Spurs’ better players this season

While the frustration of Tottenham fans was understandable, given the poor results at home this season, to take it out on Vicario made very little sense.

It was a poor mistake, and the Italian would probably be the first to admit that he has made one too many errors this season.

However, we should not forget that Vicario has delivered several Man of the Match performances this season and has saved his team on many occasions.

Frank has said that Vicario’s number one spot is not under any threat and understandably so, since the goalkeeping role is the least of Tottenham’s problems at the moment.
