‘Happy surprise’ – Report provides a positive update on Djed Spence’s form with Genoa

The print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport (as relayed by Sport Witness) have revealed that Djed Spence has impressed everyone at Genoa with the start he has made at the club and suggested that the right-back could become an important player for the club in the years to come.

Spence joined Genoa on a loan deal until the end of the season, with the Italian side having the option to sign him permanently for £8.5m in the summer (Fabrizio Romano).

The 23-year-old has started all three Serie A games for the club since sealing his switch and it appears his new employers are quite happy with the player.

On Tuesday, Genoa CEO Andres Blazquez explained that the club had had their eye on the full-back for a long time and had even failed with a move to sign him from Spurs last summer (La Repubblica).

Djed Spence has impressed at Genoa already

Gazzetta has now said that the player has been ‘a happy surprise’ for everyone at Genoa, having shown in training that he wants to ‘make the most of this opportunity’

They reveal that manager Alberto Gilardino has been impressed with the performances that Spence has delivered against Salernitana, Lecce and Empoli despite being played in multiple positions.

The publication adds that there is now belief in the Luigi Ferraris Stadium that the former Middlesbrough man can ‘become one of the pillars’ of the side in the years to come.

It sounds like the penny has finally dropped for Spence after Leeds’ decision to send him back, with the right-back now seemingly knuckling down and working hard.

While it is still early days for the youngster at Genoa, it appears as if the Serie A club do plan on activating the option to buy him permanently at the end of the season.
