‘Hard to ignore’ – Djed Spence is finally shining out on loan from Tottenham

Djed Spence’s Leeds United career is now up and running, with the right-back starting two matches over the last week for the Championship side after overcoming his injury problems.

Spence’s time at Elland Road has not gone according to plan so far, with the right-back missing a big chunk of the campaign so far due to a knee injury.

The on-loan Tottenham man returned to action a little over a week ago, coming on as a substitute in the 70th minute at Ewood Park in Leeds’ 2-0 win over Blackburn Rovers.

Daniel Farke then decided to start the 23-year-old at left-back in his side’s 1-0 loss against Sunderland last Tuesday, with the youngster coming in for praise despite the team’s poor result.

According to Football.London, after the game, Sky Sports pundit Jobi McAnuff praised Spence for his “his athleticism, his pace and his ability to get up the pitch”.

Meanwhile, Leeds Live gave the full-back a rating of seven out of 10 and praised him for his defensive work.

The outlet wrote about the Spurs man’s performance against the Black Cats: “A languid style not helped by his lack of urgency at times, but hard to ignore some vital interceptions and tackles at close quarters.”

Spence did enough to keep his place in the starting eleven for the clash against Coventry on Sunday, with the former Middlesbrough man once again playing at left-back as his side played out a 1-1 draw at Elland Road.

For his performance against Boro, Leeds Live gave him a rating of six out of 10 and wrote: “Still working his way up to full match speed, but enough tackles and drives forward to catch the eye again.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The fact that Farke is playing Spence out of position at left-back shows how much trust the Leeds boss has in the youngster. It suggests that the German coach somehow wanted to shoehorn the Tottenham man into the starting eleven.

Spence will be hoping to now have a run of matches under his belt so that he can recapture the kind of form he showed at Nottingham Forest during the 2021-22 season.
