‘Hard to take’ – Harry Kane reveals his frustration at throwing away lead yet again

Harry Kane has admitted that the 2-2 draw against Newcastle was hard to take given that Tottenham had the lead for the majority of the encounter.

Spurs have made a habit of throwing away leads late on in matches and it was once again a failure to deal with a cross into the box that led to two dropped points against Newcastle.

The North Londoners had an opportunity to make a real statement in the race for the top four after Chelsea had lost to West Brom on Saturday but defensive frailties once again cost the side.

It was Kane’s quickfire brace that had helped Tottenham turn around the game in the first-half after the Magpies took the lead by capitalising on Davinson Sanchez’ poor clearance.

The striker admitted that the away side should have had the result sewn up before the Magpies’ late equaliser.

He told Tottenham’s official website: “Whenever you are ahead in a game, as we have been a lot this season, and you give the lead away in the last five, 10 minutes, it’s always hard to take, especially against teams that you’ve had chances against and could have put the game away.”

Spurs had several good chances to get a third goal on the counter-attack but were not clinical in the final third.

Kane himself hit the post just minutes before Joe Willock’s equaliser for Newcastle but the striker admitted that his side’s second-half performance was not good enough.

The England captain added: “I feel like we could have played better in the second half. We came out a bit sloppy… on the ball, without the ball, not as much intensity as we had at the end of the first half, then we didn’t take our chances and got punished for it.

“We had some good chances, maybe the final ball or the final pass, the final touch wasn’t quite there and 2-1 is always a risky scoreline. One cross, a couple of deflections and they got a goal, and it’s always hard to respond with four, five minutes to go.

“Those are the fine margins. Look, we need to play better, it’s disappointing, but we have to dust ourselves off and go again next week.”
