Sebastien Bassong has been tipped for a big future at Tottenham by manager Harry Redknapp.

The central defender made his first appearance for Spurs in the 3-0 friendly win against Olympiacos at White Hart Lane on Sunday alongside Ledley King.

Redknapp said: “Bassong is going to be a fantastic player for us.

“You saw him today – he’s quick, strong, and good in the air.

“We checked him out with all the right people, every report was fantastic. So we don’t have any doubts about his ability – and he’s available for Sunday.”

  1. Why was everyone thinking Bassong would not be avaiable for the Liverpool game? This is a genuine question. Can anyone enlighten me?

  2. Lightning, he had a two match ban after gettin sent off against fulham so he served one of them match bans against villa (last game of the season) so he would have to miss the first game of thsi season wither for spurs or newcastle

  3. He effectively served his suspension for Newcastle on Saturday because Spurs processed his papers after the 5pm deadline on Friday, despite announcing the signing earlier. So technically he was a Newcastle player for their match, even though he wasn’t there. Good work Spurs.

  4. Tbh lightning im as confused as everyone, the only thing i can think of is that his regiatration never went through until after newcastle played on saturday

  5. Somewhat of a loophole exposed there if true. Nice work. You haven’t got any spare centre backs you can lend us (Liverpool) have you? Ours are dropping like flies. Anyone got Gary Mabbutt’s number?

  6. I thought that he was banned for 2 games ???
    Strange ???

    Harry & Levy,
make sure because we don’t trouble later with all that points deduction malarky…

  9. lightening, in answer to your question about his availability, I believe that we would have held over his registration until after Newcastle’s game with West Brom, which means that he served the second ban for that match as he would still have been a Newcastle player, making him available for us next weekend.

  10. Was surprised that he’d be banned for 3 games. I’ve always known a straight red for a professional foul amounted only to a one game ban. For sure it was not for rough or dangerous play. If I remember well it was an accidental trip when he was the last men, just like Eric Abidal for Barcelona against Chelsea. Happy though that I’ve been proven correct.

  11. But he had a 3 game suspension – he served one at the end of the season so even if the registration was carried over until after W.Brom then he still has one game to miss.
I hope the club secretary knows the score on this one otherwise Bassong will end up playing against Newcastle next season after we receive a 20 point deduction and get relegated to the Championship.
If anyone knows the real truth on this let us know!!

  12. I can’t see where a £8 to £10m player fits in when Woodgate and Dawson are back. It seems a hell of alot of money for back up. Especially when all four are fit, he’ll be fourth choice!

  13. CracyC: I think Harry was worried that we did not have quality cover for King & Woody. King can only play once a week, so that only left 2 centre backs. If one is injured (and they are both injury prone) we look very short. Dorvite didn’t look up to it in pre-season, nor did anyone playing out of their usual position. We now have 4 quality players to select up front and the same at the back. Good cover if players are injured and a nice selection dilemma for Harry if not!

  14. Hey guys, if you want to clear it up once and for all go to the FA website and check out SuspensionLists. It clearly states that Bassong received a 2 match ban, he has only served one (against Villa.) The only way out would to have been not lodging his reg for Spurs, this can’t be true for he was reistered in time to play for us on sunday! Confused , you will be after this edition of “Soap.”

  15. According to the suspended players list on the FA website, Newcastle United FC Sebastian Bassong Nguena 16/05/2009 Suspended from all football until the Club have completed 2 first team matches for a Sending Off in a match played on 16/05/2009.

Newcastle, the club in question, has played one first team match plus that against Villa making 2. This should now clear it up. Bassong is available

  16. he is playing. It’s on the club website. relax ladies.

I also think he will be pushing hard for a regular starting place. Woodie and King played lots of games last season when we should have rested them due to injuries. Add to that,Bassong can play anywhere across the back and also at Centre-mid so he will get plenty of games and well worth £8m

  17. bassong can play against liverpool as newcastle have played 2 games since his red card ,it doesn`t matter who he signs for as long as newcastle play their 2 games ,sounds an odd rule that i never knew about until today ,but he can`t play for anyone until those 2 1st team games have been played & against west brom that was their second
