Harry Kane admits that the Tottenham players just want the season to end

Harry Kane has admitted that he and his Tottenham teammates just want the campaign to end and remarked that Ryan Mason is not to blame for the team’s recent struggles.

After the loss to Brentford on Saturday, it looks pretty likely that Spurs are not going to be in any European competition next season, with the North Londoners at risk of finishing as low as ninth in the table.

It has been a disastrous campaign for the club, particularly when one thinks back to the optimism around N17 last summer at the start of what was Antonio Conte‘s first full season in charge.

Harry Kane admitted it has been a forgettable campaign for everyone at Spurs but insisted that the players are hoping to finish it on a positive note with a win at Elland Road.

The 29-year-old told The Evening Standard after Saturday’s loss: “It’s hard. You feel responsible. We wanted to send the fans home happy.

“You want to enjoy the moment with your family but the fans can’t enjoy it as much as we would have done. We have to keep battling, keep working and try to send the away fans home happy on Sunday.

“It’s been a difficult season. I think we want it to end but we wanted it to end on a couple of wins. We fully believed that was possible after the way we played in the first half.

“Brentford are only a point behind us so it shows any team can punish you. The league is getting tougher and if you don’t keep on top of things you can find yourself dropping down to mid-table and that’s where we’ve been in the last couple of months.”

The Tottenham hierarchy may have been hoping that giving Ryan Mason the reins would rejuvenate the squad and help the club finish the season strongly but the move has not worked, with Lilywhites having won just one of the 31-year-old’s five games in charge.

However, Kane insisted that his former teammate is not to blame as he simply has not had the time needed for the squad to learn his philosophy.

The striker added: “Ryan is trying to help us as much as possible. We changed the system again and I thought it worked great in the first half.

“Sometimes these things take time. The type of training, energy and fitness takes a while to build up but when you’re in the middle of the season with few games to go you haven’t got the chance to do that.

I do not think the club nor the fans blame Mason for any of the recent results as the 31-year-old has walked into a difficult situation and has hardly had any time on the training ground to work with the squad.

It is clear that everyone at Spurs just wants this season to be done so that they can wipe the slate clean and start fresh this summer under a new director of football and head coach.
