Harry Kane asked whether he thinks he can break Shearer’s PL record – 87 behind

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane has reiterated his intention to break Alan Shearer’s Premier League goal record.

The talisman has notched 173 goals in 264 Premier League appearances (Transfermarkt) which places him seventh in the all-time list and 87 behind Shearer’s tally of 260.

This season hasn’t been Kane’s most prolific in a Spurs shirt, having struggled to hit form for the first half of the campaign after failing to secure a transfer to Manchester City last summer (Sky Sports).

But the England captain looked in top form on Saturday, with his latest strikes coming ironically against City to help power Spurs to a stunning 3-2 win over the league leaders.

Kane, who is at the age of 28, has since admitted that Shearer’s record is still a personal target for him to reach and he has set his sights on rewriting the history books.

Asked if he thinks he can break the record on BT Sport’s What I Wore series, he said: “I think it’s there to be done. Obviously, it’s still 90 odd goals to get there, but it’s definitely an aim to try and reach it.

“Obviously I feel like I’ve still got many more years of my career to go and it will be incredible. Shearer was an incredible striker, incredible No 9.

“So even to be close now is great, but for sure it’s definitely something that I want to try and achieve.”

Kane is edging closer to Shearer’s record despite having a down year on the goal front. He is at an age where he could keep going at a high level for another five or so years and that record could be his if he stays fit and avoids injuries.
