Harry Kane calls for Tottenham to ‘take advantage’ of Conte to hit new heights

Harry Kane has called for Tottenham to ‘take advantage’ of working under Antonio Conte to get the club back to its high levels.

Tottenham have stuttered in the seasons following Mauricio Pochettino’s departure, finishing sixth and seventh in the Premier League in the two campaigns after the Argentine’s exit.

The club’s experiment in appointing Jose Mourinho came to an abrupt end in March last year, while his successor in Nuno Espirito Santo was dismissed from his post in November after just four months in charge.

Spurs then made a lucrative swoop to appoint Conte, who had recently come off a dominant season with Inter Milan brought the Scudetto back to the San Siro.

Kane admits the level of Spurs has fallen in the last couple of seasons, but now believes a manager of Conte’s calibre can arrest the club’s drop in quality.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Kane said: “He’s one of the best managers in the world.

“We’ve not really reached the heights we’ve wanted to as a club over the last couple of years. It’s a big opportunity now to take advantage of what we’ve got.

“He’s a manager that demands a lot. He’s doing everything he can and as players, we’ve responded really well to him and everyone’s working as hard as possible to get success. That’s the ultimate goal for everyone here at the club.”

Since Pochettino’s departure two years ago, a host of players key to the side’s rise up the ladder have also left North London.

England captain Kane believes the exit of what was primarily Spurs’ core led the club to ‘fall behind the pack’ and ultimately held back any progression.

He added: “Players come and go and sometimes it disrupts the team a little bit. Coaches come and go and it takes time to adapt.

“The fact is, in the Premier League especially, so many teams are so good and everyone’s building to try and break into that top six. There’s a good eight or nine teams who are fighting for those places.

“If you don’t get one or two things right then you can really fall behind the pack and that’s kind of happened to us. So we need to be careful that we don’t keep falling.

“We’re feeling confident that we can do that, especially since the manager’s come in.”

Although Kane has backed Conte to lift Spurs going forward, he was honest in admitting his side hadn’t achieved what they were capable of before his appointment and is confident in the squad’s ability to reverse those results.

He added: “You need to be honest with yourself. As a club, we’ve not achieved what we’ve wanted to over the last couple of years for sure.

“We’ve taken a dip in terms of where we were three or four years ago. It’s important that you do realise that – that is the truth.

“We need to respond, and as players, it’s our responsibility to try to show the manager that we’re capable of taking this team back to the highest level.”

Kane looks much perkier and into things under Conte – it is clear to see. He probably just didn’t see the club’s vision when it appointed Nuno, so it was always going to take someone like Conte to change his view on things. It has been promising so far and hopefully, it can lead to better things down the line.
