Harry Kane pays tribute to Jermain Defoe after legendary Spurs striker retires

Harry Kane has paid tribute to former Tottenham striker and teammate Jermain Defoe following his retirement from professional football.

Defoe called time on his playing career on Thursday at 39-years-old having netted over 286 goals in 731 games across seven different clubs (Transfermarkt).

Of those, 143 came in at Tottenham where he enjoyed two different permanent spells with the club to record 362 appearances in total (Transfermarkt).

Defoe’s later time at Spurs saw him witness the emergence of Kane, with the pair first crossing paths in the senior team during the 2013/14 season under Andre Villas-Boas.

Kane has since emerged as one of the world’s best strikers and has taken the captain’s armband for England on the back of a huge rise up the football pecking order.

And the 28-year-old led tributes to Defoe after his announcement, thanking him for the advice he offered him as a youngster at Spurs.

He posted on Instagram Stories (24/03/22): “Top striker. Top bloke and someone who gave me some great advice early in my career, as well as his number 18 shirt. Happy retirement.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Defoe retires as one of the deadliest finishers in English football and he had a big impact at Spurs during his tenures at the club. Kane won’t have spent too much time with him either at club or international level, but he still learnt plenty off him en route to becoming one of the best finishers in the world.
