‘Harry Kane was chasing things down’ – Pundit hits out at flat Tottenham performance

Clinton Morrison has questioned the effort and attitude of the Tottenham players after their 2-0 loss to Chelsea on Wednesday.

Tottenham produced what was arguably their most disappointing performance of the Antonio Conte era so far, as they were brushed aside by Chelsea in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.

The Blues took the lead through Kai Havertz just five minutes into the game and their lead was doubled when Japhet Tanganga’s clearing header went in off Ben Davies just past the half-hour mark.

Spurs gave a better account of themselves in the second half but Thomas Tuchel’s men cruised to a victory.

Conte did not hold back in his criticism of Tottenham’s performance, insisting that the game showed the gulf in class between the two sides.

While Morrison insisted that the North Londoners are still not out of the tie, he accused some of the Spurs stars of going through the motions at Stamford Bridge.

The former Crystal Palace striker told BBC Radio 5 Live (05/01/22 from 21:45 onwards – as relayed by The Daily Mail): “Spurs aren’t out of it but it was comfortable for Chelsea. They were in second gear. It didn’t look like a semi-final for Spurs.

“It looked like they were going through the motions. They’re still in it if they can get the first goal next week.

“It was a flat performance. Who really thinks this is a big cup competition to win?

“Harry Kane was chasing things down but I didn’t see many others. You want to get to a final and lift some silverware.

“If Chelsea wanted to go to that next level, they could have. There was a lot left in the tank. 2-0 flattered Spurs.”

The performance certainly left a lot to be desired and clearly showed that our squad strength is not good enough to compete on multiple fronts. Hopefully, the result proves to be the catalyst for the club to strengthen the squad significantly in this month.
