Harry Redknapp claims poor recruitment cost him title challenge with Spurs

Former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has claimed the club’s poor transfer business during his time in charge cost a potential push for the Premier League title.

Spurs are currently on the back of an indifferent January transfer window, which saw the club miss out on some intended targets.

Antonio Conte’s side tracked Adama Traore throughout but could not secure a deal, with the Spaniard eventually joining Barcelona, while Liverpool pipped Spurs to the signing of Luis Diaz (The Telegraph).

Tottenham did manage to recruit Juventus duo Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski on deadline day, but their arrivals in North London come with the club struggling to grind out results.

Spurs have dropped down to eighth place in the league and have fallen behind in the race for the Champions League places, but have preserved their status in the FA Cup this term.

Redknapp, who managed Spurs between 2008 and 2012, feels the club’s recent transfer business makes a successful end to the campaign difficult to achieve and believes a similar situation derailed a title challenge during his tenure.

He told talkSPORT: “I’ve been through that situation [a frustrating transfer window] there, I know what it’s like.

“I remember we got to Christmas one year and we needed a couple of players to have a real push, I really felt we could challenge for the title, we were that close that year.

“They wouldn’t push the boat out, I ended up bringing in Louis Saha – who had been a great player but was coming to the end of his career – and Ryan Nelson, again a fantastic centre-half in his day but was a free transfer.

“It was time to have a go and push the boat out but it didn’t happen. I think they need to do that now, they need to really spend some money and bring in a couple of real top players.”

The recruitment in recent years has been pretty shoddy and it is quite shocking to see just how much money has been spent on players not adding enough quality. That has to change because it is really hindering how far the club can go.
