Harry Redknapp compares Spurs player with Jan Vertonghen

Harry Redknapp has named two Tottenham Hotspur players in his Premier League team of the week.

Tottenham headed to Villa Park on Sunday knowing that a defeat against Aston Villa would see the North Londoners fall eight points behind their opponents in the race for a top four finish in the Premier League.

With Villa having played their Europa League round of sixteen first leg against Ajax in Amsterdam on Thursday night, Tottenham started the match the brighter of the two sides but could not make their early possession count in front of goal.

Micky van de Ven was particularly a bright spark in the first half having helped to limit Villa’s threat in behind with his pace, only to frustratingly suffer another hamstring problem which saw him replaced by Radu Dragusin just minutes into the second half.

Despite playing just 48 minutes of the game, van de Ven’s display was enough to catch the eye of former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp.

The 77-year-old told BetVictor: “Another Dutch centre-half, Micky van de Ven at Spurs, who impressed against Aston Villa. This boy has caught my eye a few times this season and looks a really nice bit of business for the club.

“He’s got shades of Jan Vertonghen about him but with more pace, this boy is absolutely rapid! He’s got all the tools to be a top, top defender.”

The former Spurs boss also was impressed by the performance of Tottenham first team captain Heung-min Son who scored the third goal of the 4-0 rout over Villa.

Redknapp added: “Heung-min Son has had such a great season and was the difference again for Tottenham. That win over Aston Villa was massive and that Villa defence just couldn’t live with the lad’s pace and movement.

“You just knew he’d score that chance he got at the end, what a finisher he is. Spurs look in the driving seat for that fourth spot now, and their skipper is a big reason why.”
