Harry Redknapp singles out Spurs pair who need to improve

Former Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp believes that Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen need to show an improvement in their performances.

The Belgian pair have been a rock at the heart of the Spurs defence for the past few seasons but have been below their best in what has been a difficult season to date for Tottenham.

Both players are out of contract in North London at the end of the current campaign with their futures remaining up in the air.

Going into the international break, Spurs had conceded ten goals in their previous two matches having been thrashed 7-2 to Bayern Munich on their home turf which was followed by a toothless display on the south coast in a 3-0 loss at the hands of Brighton.

Redknapp singled out the pair to start raising their game which will start with the visit of Watford to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

“The two centre halves as well (Vertonghen and Alderweireld) – the two Belgian boys – they have to start performing,” Redknapp told the Mirror.

Opinion

If players do not want to commit their future to the club, Mauricio Pochettino and Daniel Levy need to make a joint-decision to freeze out the contract rebels.

Hopefully, Vertonghen and Alderweireld start to rediscover their form of old sooner rather than later.
