Report: Leicester City in talks for out-of-favour Spurs player

Leicester City manager Enzo Maresca is targeting a move for Tottenham Hotspur outcast Harry Winks as he bids to take the Foxes to promotion from the Championship at the first time of asking.

Winks had previously spent his entire career with Tottenham, having come through the club’s academy, and made 203 appearances for the Lilywhites over the years (Transfermarkt).

Having found himself on the fringes of Antonio Conte’s squad last year, Winks moved to Sampdoria on loan for the 2022/23 campaign. Injury issues hampered his progress in Italy, but he managed to make 20 appearances in Serie A last term having undergone ankle surgery in the winter (Transfermarkt).

Despite some promising displays from the Englishman, he was unable to help save Sampdoria from relegation to the second tier of Italian football.

New Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou is expected to make wholesale changes to the squad that he inherited this summer which includes Spurs looking to cash in on the England international (The Telegraph).

Leeds United have already been linked with a move for the 27-year-old as they also prepare for life in the Championship (SampNews24).

Leicester City want to sign Harry Winks

It has emerged that Leicester City are keen to snap up Winks this summer, and negotiations are already thought to be underway on the deal.

The Telegraph, have claimed that new Leicester boss Maresca believes Winks “has the ability and versatility to become a key part of his squad.”

With just one year left on his current contract, it is thought Winks “will be allowed to leave” Tottenham. The report states “negotiations are understood to be under way” for the proposed switch.

Spurs Web Opinion

This feels like the perfect deal for all parties. Winks will be a great fit for a Leicester side playing in the Championship, he will play regularly, and we will be able to finally offload a player who sadly just doesn’t have a place here anymore.

Winks will have certainly done himself no harm during the second half of his loan spell in Italy to get himself back in the shop window but remains to be seen whether he will be prepared to drop down a division to kick-start his career back in England.
