Harry Winks opens up about the story behind his new number 8 shirt

After a lengthy time out through injury, Spurs fans will be happy to see Harry Winks back on the pitch, making a cameo appearance in the 89th minute against Fulham last weekend.

And that’s not all, Winks has brought something new with him this season, the prestigious number 8 shirt on his back.

After Pochettino chose not to strengthen in the centre midfield position, or any position for that matter, clear faith has been shown in the likes of Winks to play a key role this year.

In an interview with the Tottenham club website, Winks said: “It’s something I’ve always dreamed of since I was a little boy, to have the number eight at Tottenham. It really is special.

“There have been so many great names and great players who have played in that shirt over the years and when you’re a young fan and aspiring Tottenham player, number eight, as a midfielder, is just the pinnacle so to get the number is an honour and I’ve got to work hard to do it justice.”

When asked how he secured the new number, Winks wasn’t ashamed to say that he had actually put in a request with the club, showing his sheer confidence in his own ability.

“I asked the club if I could have it. I don’t really know how it all happened if I’m being honest – the club just sorted it for me and I was just told one day that I was going to have it, so it was all a bit of a whirlwind when I found out. I’m very grateful and I’m looking forward to knuckling down and working hard now.”
