Has Toby Alderweireld just hinted he will be at Spurs next season?

Tottenham Hotspur take on Ajax tonight in the club’s biggest game of their recent history, the Champions League semi-final.

Spurs have never reached this point in the competition, and it will prove to be doubly special for a number of the club’s first team players.

Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertomghen, Christian Eriksen, and Davinson Sanchez all played for Ajax in their younger days, but they must now overcome their old club to reach the final.

Alderweireld, in particular, was at the Dutch outfit in 2008, where he spent five years of his career until moving to Atletico Madrid.

Toby may be contracted at Tottenham for now, but rumours have been rife in recent months as the Belgian defender’s contract comes to a close (Express).

Alderweireld had his deal extended earlier this year, meaning his contract now runs out in the summer of 2020.

However, this extension activated a £25m release clause, meaning the central defender could be on his way this summer (Guardian).

Aldwerweireld’s latest comments in an interview with De Telegraaf may give Spurs fans hope though, as he seems to indicate he will see out his contract.

On a potential move back to Ajax this summer, he said: “I can make very popular statements, but I don’t know what’s coming my way. I do not say ‘no’ in advance for the future.

“But I am now fully focused on Tottenham and after that, I also have a contract for one season.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

I believe that the recent Champions League success will play into Tottenham’s hands, especially if they make the final of the competition. Surely this will tip the scales in terms of Alderweireld seeing out his contract and staying another year, and Eriksen putting pen to paper on a new deal. I believe both will be playing at the new stadium next season.
