‘Has won big trophies’ – Bent surprised Spurs have not approached 61-year-old

Darren Bent has revealed that he is surprised Tottenham have not shown interest in appointing Rafael Benitez as their next head coach.

It has been over two months since Jose Mourinho was sacked by Spurs but the club look no closer to securing a replacement.

After abandoning their chase for Gennaro Gattuso, reports indicate that the North London club are back to square one in their managerial hunt.

Over recent days, it has been suggested that Tottenham could now look to appoint either Nuno Espirito Santo or Graham Potter.

However, Bent is puzzled as to why Spurs are not going for Benitez, given the number of trophies that the Spaniard has won.

Benitez seems to be edging closer to a move to Goodison Park and Bent questioned why Tottenham are not trying to hijack the deal for the 61-year-old.

The former Spurs striker told talkSPORT (20/06/21 from 20:00 onwards): “There’s one name, which has been linked to Everton that I don’t quite understand because of his connections to the other side of Merseyside.

“But what about Rafa Benitez? I am surprised that Spurs haven’t, at least, gone for him because he has got some pedigree and he has won big trophies.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The Mourinho experiment thought us that having an impressive CV and a history of winning trophies in the past, does not necessarily make one the right candidate. Rafa’s tactics have become antiquated in light of the young, progressive managers that have emerged over the last decade. I would much rather see the job being handed to someone like Potter even though he lacks experience managing big clubs.
