‘Hasn’t reached his ceiling yet’ – National manager praises form of Spurs youngster

Spain U21 coach Luis de la Fuente has praised the way Valencia have helped Tottenham loanee Bryan Gil rediscover his form.

Gil joined the Spanish side on loan in the January transfer window, having failed to make a breakthrough into the Spurs fold upon his arrival last summer.

He struggled for minutes under Nuno Espirito Santo and failed to gather opportunities under current head coach Antonio Conte.

But Gil has gained confidence at Valencia with a number of eye-catching displays, with Bordalas admitting the Spurs winger would be welcome to stay long-term (El Mercantil Valenciano).

The winger’s improved form of late has also seen him called up to the Spain U21 fold under De La Fuente, who has hailed the trust he has been given to show what he is capable of.

He told Super Deporte: “I have always demanded opportunities for these players, confidence and continuity.

“Now he has found it in Valencia. If you trust them, they never fail. They are top players.

“He has the opportunity. They trust him, and he has spectacular mental strength. He hasn’t reached his ceiling yet.”

Gil’s talents weren’t really being utilised at Spurs but it also never helped that he was simply not ready to compete in English football.

His loan at Valencia seems to be going well, though, which will serve as a boost for Spurs heading into next season – especially if he is going to be in their plans.
