‘Haunt Harry for the rest of his life’ – Premier League legend on Kane miss

Former Newcastle United forward Alan Shearer has claimed that Harry Kane’s penalty miss against France will haunt him for the rest of his life.

Kane had already scored from the spot thirty minutes prior when they were awarded a second penalty following a lengthy VAR check, however, uncharacteristically he blazed his effort over the crossbar of Hugo Lloris and saw the Three Lions crash out of the World Cup at the quarter-final stage following the 2-1 defeat.

The Tottenham Hotspur forward has already admitted that he will have to live with the missed penalty and try to take it on the chin (ESPN).

The goal would not have only levelled the scoreline with seven minutes remaining but would have also made Kane England’s all-time record goalscorer.

Shearer, who holds the Premier League goalscoring record, which Kane is also trying to better, told The Athletic: “That’s the life of a centre-forward. You put yourself in those positions and it will haunt Harry for the rest of his life, but that is what you have to put up with as forward – you win some and you lose some.

“You don’t score every one and some chances mean more than others and it will hurt like hell.

“The biggest one I ever missed was against Sunderland and it still haunts me to this day.

“He won’t sleep well for a long time, that’s his personality and I know how much it means to him and the rest of the team.

“He will think he has cost England. We look at it a different way – he has saved us on many occasions.

“It hurts. It really hurts but you can imagine how the players feel if it hurts us so much.”

After missing out on World Cup glory, Spurs fans will be hoping that Kane does not feel the need to go out and prove himself by seeking a move at club level in a bid to win silverware.

Hopefully, Tottenham can persuade Kane that his future should remain in north London by proving ambition in the transfer market which could result in both him and Antonio Conte committing their future to the club.
