‘He deserves it’ – England star ‘delighted’ to see Eric Dier back in the squad

Nick Pope has revealed that he is delighted to see Eric Dier back in the England squad and remarked that the Tottenham defender was fully deserving of his call-up.

Dier has returned to the England set-up for the first time in almost two years for the upcoming Nations League fixtures against Germany and Italy.

The centre-back’s return to the squad is certainly timely, with this being the last squad that Gareth Southgate will select ahead of picking the 26-man squad for the World Cup, which has to be finalised before November 13 (Daily Mail).

The Tottenham man admitted to The Evening Standard after the win over the Foxes on Saturday that he felt he would have had no chance of being on the plane for Qatar had he not made it back into the squad for this international break.

Pope insisted that he had no doubts about Dier’s quality from having been in previous squads with the 28-year-old.

The Newcastle United goalkeeper told talkSPORT: “It’s great for Eric. I was with him a few years ago and always knew he was a top, top player. Delighted to see him picked. With the form he has shown, he deserves it. It’s a department we’re strong in, we’ve got real strength in depth.”

I believe that Dier deserves to start for England, particularly if Southgate is planning on employing a back three.

However, I am not sure if the 28-year-old will get any minutes against Germany or Italy as the likes of John Stones, Harry Maguire and Kyle Walker (who Southgate tends to use on the right of a three) are probably ahead of him in the pecking order.

It certainly will not be a bad thing from a Spurs perspective if the centre-back does not play during the international break and returns fresh for the North London derby.
