Some Spurs fans have indicated that they would not begrudge Jan Vertonghen a transfer to Manchester City this summer amidst reports that Pep Guardiola’s side want to sign the defender.
The Telegraph claim that City are looking for players who can cover both centre-back and left-back positions and the fact the Vertonghen comes with considerable Premier League experience makes him an attractive option for the former Premier League champions.
The defender has only made one start since signing a short-term contract extension with Spurs until the end of the season and reports indicate he is set to exit the North London giants this summer after eight seasons at the club (Football Insider).
The Belgian international is reported to be attracting interest from clubs in Italy and Spain (Calcio Mercato) but City’s entrance into the equation could complicate matters.
Some Tottenham fans insist that they would be happy for the long-serving defender to join City and get some trophies under his belt.
Here’s how they reacted to reports linking the 33-year-old with a move to the Etihad.
If he’s barely good enough for us, how can he be good enough for city?

He will have better players around him and have less defending to do

Wouldnt be a bad move for them

I hope he can win something there. It’s so well deserved!

Go get your trophies Jan

Would be a mistake not to sign him up for another year

Can’t believe we’re letting him go. Might not be first choice anymore but still an excellent player. There’s been plenty of great centre halves that ain’t quick but not too many a good on the ball as Jan.

Go Jan, win a trophy, you deserve it before you retire

I’m all for Jan being there for a season and winning something.

Spurs Web Opinion
The thought of seeing Jan Vertonghen run out in another Premier League side’s kit is pretty difficult to digest. However, there is no question that the 33-year-old deserves to win silverware for how well he has played for us over the best part of the last decade. He has been an absolutely fantastic servant to the club and it is a shame that we could not win a trophy during his time with us.
