‘He feels like he’s fit’ – Pochettino answers question on Jan Vertonghen return date

Tottenham have been without a consistent Jan Vertonghen for a number of months now, as the Belgian defender has bounced from one injury to the next.

Spurs had only just got him back and playing alongside long term partner Toby Alderweireld when Jan was hit with yet another problem a week or so ago.

A major part of Spurs’ success in recent years has surrounded the classy and no-nonsense defending of the Belgian duo, and the team always seems to lose that defensive edge without them.

It also means Pochettino has been unable to name a stable back two all season.

Spurs have had Toby playing alongside Jan, Davinson Sanchez, Juan Foyth, even left back Ben Davies.

Tottenham need Vertonghen fit and ready to play if they are to mount a serious title charge in the new year.

Super Jan is also fresh off the back of a contract extension, keeping him at the club until at least the summer of 2020.

Poch had this to say (Football London): “I was talking this morning with him. He feels like he’s fit but there’s still some point where it still hurts him. He’s recovering well and we’ll see. Hopefully as soon as possible.”
