‘He has inspired me’ – Manager reveals he wanted to sign Spurs player six months ago

Valencia head coach Jose Bordalas has admitted he is happy to have signed Bryan Gil after Tottenham beat his side to the winger’s signature last summer.

Gil was one of a host of outgoings from Tottenham on transfer deadline day alongside midfielders Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso, all of whom departed on loan.

The 20-year-old penned a loan deal with Valencia until the end of the season just six months after joining Spurs in a £21 million move from Sevilla (Sky Sports).

Spain international Gil struggled to break into the Spurs line-up throughout his time in North London and failed to make a single Premier League start under Antonio Conte.

Gil’s return to La Liga will not only look to inspire confidence for himself, but for Valencia’s manager Bordalas too.

The head coach has revealed he is glad to have finally got his hands on Gil after his side were interested in signing him over the summer before Spurs swooped in (El Partidazo de COPE).

Bordalas told Marca: “They [Gil, Ilaix Moriba and Eray Comert] are the signings that the club has made. They are three boys who come to help.

“Ilaix is a young boy. We saw him at Barcelona last season. I wanted Bryan Gil in the summer and it couldn’t be because Tottenham signed him.

“I was talking to this boy when he was at the Olympics [in Tokyo last summer]. Recently, we have also talked. He is a boy in whom I have inspired confidence and he has inspired me.

“He is a boy who is going to contribute a lot to us. He has qualities and he is very committed.”

Gil has had a tough time at Tottenham so far and hopefully his loan to Valencia will provide him with a bit of a confidence boost going forward.

It is easy to forget how young he is and it can be tough moving to a new country and league, so we’ve got to give him time to keep developing.
