‘He is a leader’ – Teddy Sheringham believes PL player would be a great addition to Spurs

Teddy Sheringham certainly knows a thing or two about being a striker in the Premier League having turned out for Nottingham Forest, Tottenham, West Ham and Manchester United in the top flight.

Sheringham believes the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Chelsea should not think twice about signing Brentford’s Ivan Toney, insisting the striker could add a lot to their squads.

Would Ivan Toney be a good signing for Tottenham?

Strikers who guarantee 20-plus goals in the Premier League are extremely hard to come by and one would have thought that there would be a huge battle for Toney’s signature this summer, with the 27-year-old having just a year left on his contract with Brentford.

However, that does not quite appear to be the case as Football Transfers reported last week that Arsenal, Chelsea and Man Utd had cooled their interest in the England international.

The report claimed that the path has been cleared for Spurs to push forward with a move for the centre-forward, with the Lilywhites said to be readying a £40m offer for the player.

Tottenham vs West Ham in the race for Ivan Toney

The publication suggested that Tottenham’s main competition for the striker would come from West Ham, who are also said to be quite keen on signing the Bees star.

When asked about the race for the Brentford man’s signature, Sheringham has now told Genting Casino: “I think Ivan Toney would be a fantastic signing for anyone in London, Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea or even West Ham.

“Any one of those clubs would have him, he is a fantastic player who would enhance any of those sides I’ve just mentioned.

“I don’t know what’s happened to his form, but I think a player of his stature can give a lot to a football team, he is a leader who knows his position and is coming into the prime of his career.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I certainly do not see Spurs breaking the bank for Toney. While the Brentford star is a top-class goalscorer and will add something different to the Tottenham squad, I get the feeling that Postecoglou does not see him as a particularly great fit for his system.

Tottenham do need a quality frontman to lead the line with Richarlison’s injury record rendering him unable to be relied upon to deliver week in, week out.

While Ange Postecoglou opted to play Heung-min Son down the middle for the majority of matches, the captain looked more at home when he was shifted to the left.
