‘He is never’ – Presenter questions Paratici’s decision to buy 26-year-old for Spurs

Gillette Soccer Saturday presenter Jeff Stelling has questioned why Tottenham Hotspur brought in Pierluigi Gollini last summer if they were not going to give him game time.

Golllini joined Spurs on a season-long loan deal from Atalanta in the summer, with the North Londoners having the option to sign the goalkeeper on a permanent basis for £13m (Sky Sports).

However, the Italian was clearly brought in as understudy to Hugo Lloris and has not made a single Premier League appearance for the Lilywhites so far.

The fact that Lloris signed a contract extension until 2024 last month suggested that Antonio Conte has given his vote of confidence for the Frenchman to continue as Tottenham’s number one.

The Spurs boss has also been publicly very complimentary of the 35-year-old’s ability between the sticks as well as his leadership qualities (Football.London).

However, Lloris made an uncharacteristic couple of errors against Wolves on Sunday and the away side took full advantage to score on both instances.

The Frenchman parried a shot straight into the path of Raul Jimenez, who gave Bruno Lage’s men the deal before the goalkeeper’s sloppy pass to Ben Davies put Spurs on the back foot and led to Wolves’ second.

On the back of Lloris’ performance against Wolves, Stelling questioned why Fabio Paratici brought Gollini into the club if the former Atalanta man was not going to get any opportunities.

He told Sky Sports News (1:20pm, February 12, 2022) about the Spurs managing director of football: “He brought in Pierluigi Gollini. He is never going to get a game, is he?”

Lloris did not cover himself in glory in the two goals but he was certainly not the only one to blame on either occasion. I thought Ben Davies should have still comfortably cleared his lines in the build-up to Wolves’ second.

Lloris has hardly put a foot wrong over the last couple of years and it would be unfair to criticise him too harshly for his performance against Wolves.
