‘He is on track’ – Heurelho Gomes makes Pochettino prediction for Conte at Spurs

Heurelho Gomes has tipped Antonio Conte to have a strong impact and reach the level just like Mauricio Pochettino did at Tottenham.

Conte, who was appointed by Spurs in November, has experienced a mixed level of fortunes during his tenure so far.

The 52-year-old went unbeaten in his first nine Premier League games in charge of the club and lifted Spurs back in contention for a Champions League place come the end of the season.

However, he has seen his side struggle carry momentum since the turn of the year, with a strange win-loss-win-loss pattern leaving them out of all domestic competitions and playing catch-up to those above them in the table.

Despite Tottenham’s volatile form of late and over the last few seasons, former goalkeeper Gomes believes he can see progress occurring with his old employers.

The Brazilian has also backed Conte to emulate the levels of current Paris Saint-Germain manager Pochettino, who spent over five years building Spurs up into a competitive outfit.

Gomes told The Set Pieces: “I think they are playing better now. In the past few years, we did see a better Tottenham side.

“They are playing better now than they were playing at the beginning of the season. I think he [Conte] is on track to achieve the things Mauricio Pochettino did.”

Conte needs time to implement what he wants, as well as receiving support from those above him.

Pochettino didn’t necessarily have as much backing as he should have received which made things turn stale and the reason why Spurs are still in a sort of mess.

Spurs do need to support their managers and someone like Conte has the ideas needed to rebuild the club, but it has to come with financial support to make it viable.
