‘He is very honest’ – Lamela admits he is enjoying life under Mourinho

Erik Lamela has become the latest Tottenham star to praise the work Jose Mourinho has done at the club and admitted that he is enjoying working under the Portuguese coach.

The Argentine’s time at the club looked to be running out at the end of last season and there were reports over the summer that the Lilywhites could cash-in on him (Daily Star) .

However, not only has he ended up staying but he has seen a few opportunities come his way at the start of the season and staked his claim for a place in the side.

Mourinho admitted last season that the former Roma man has been a player he has always liked and it looks like the feeling between the pair is mutual.

The 28-year-old told Goal.com: “Whatever people might say about him, I find Mourinho to be a really nice person and we smile with him every day.

“He is very honest with the players and we have a good relationship with him. Also, he is a winner and we want to win with him.”

The Argentina international admitted that he was saddened by the departure of his compatriot, Mauricio Pochettino last year but insisted that the squad is now fully focussed on winning trophies under Mourinho.

He added: “The moment when the manager comes in was very strange for us and you will see the reaction of the players when we see him for the first time on the Amazon documentary. We didn’t know Pochettino was leaving and suddenly Mourinho was there.

“We had so long with Pochettino, so it was sad when he was not here anymore, but there is always the next game and that’s all you can think about. Now we know Mourinho and everyone is very happy working with him.”

In many respects, Lamela is the kind of player that perfectly suits Mourinho’s ethos. The 28-year-old never lets his intensity drop and gives 100 per cent every single time he is on the pitch. He also does not complain if he is left out of the team and usually makes a very good impact while coming on a substitute. As demonstrated by the Martial incident, he also has a nasty streak and does not mind getting his hands dirty in order to win.
