‘He never ever forces’ – Ex-Spurs boss gives insight into Levy transfer no-no

Tim Sherwood has claimed that Daniel Levy never forces any player out of the door at Tottenham Hotspur against his manager’s wishes.

When Sky Sport Italia quoted Antonio Conte as saying that Tottenham might have weakened their squad rather than strengthened it, there was quite a lot of speculation suggesting that the Italian might walk out (Telegraph).

However, Conte has since clarified that he had been quoted out of context and questioned why media outlets were trying to create a problem between him and the club (Football.London).

Sherwood insisted that Levy is never one to sell players against the manager’s wishes.

The former interim Spurs head coach told Premier League Productions (23/02/22 at 10:50 pm): “Last week, he (Conte) said he did an interview in Italy (with Sky Italia) and he got misquoted.

“He said ‘the players that have left the club, they are weaker. They signed two and they lost four.’

“But he wasn’t playing those players. What I know of Daniel Levy is he never ever forces any manager at that football club to sell players. If they want to keep them, he is happy to keep them.

Now, perhaps he never got to bring in the players he wanted to bring in during the window.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I am not surprised that many Spurs fans are completely excusing Conte for his outburst and pointing the finger of blame at Levy as some seem to view the Italian as the messiah and Levy as everything that is the issue with the club.

In reality, Levy has taken a step back from the footballing decisions at the club and has handed over the reins to Paratici. There is nothing Paratici or the Spurs board can do to address the weaknesses in the squad until the summer.

So, for Conte to moan publicly after every result does not do anyone any favours. If he cannot get on with his job in a professional manner, I would rather see him walk out.

For me, it is far more important to have a manager who is proud to be in charge of Spurs and who has a connection with the club, rather than a “serial winner” who throws his toys out of the pram after every bad result.
