‘He put his hand up’ – Postecoglou really impressed by Werner’s Spurs debut

Ange Postecoglou was impressed by Timo Werner’s Tottenham debut this evening against Manchester United, with the German assisting Rodrigo Bentancur’s equaliser.

Postecoglou was left with little choice but to start his new loan signing against the Red Devils, with Heung-min Son away on international duty and a number of other wingers out injured.

Werner, who had a torrid time at Chelsea during his last stint in the Premier League, started on the left of a front three alongside Richarlison and Brennan Johnson.

Although he has not made many starts of late over at RB Leipzig, Werner lasted most of the match and was replaced deep into the second half by Bryan Gil, but not before leaving his mark on the game.

It was Werner who laid the ball into the path of Bentancur to burst into the Man United box and lash one past a helpless Onana at the start of the second half.

Postecoglou congratulates Timo Werner on his debut

Postecoglou said (Football London): “Timo, he’s had two sessions with us, he hasn’t started a game for ages but I saw today I think he can be really exciting for us once he get to understand our game and gets up to speed with our training.

“You could see there were little moments today, he was always a threat and I think he will enjoy his football here.

“More importantly today I had no option but to start him. He was a really willing participant in it. He wanted to help. He put his hand up and said whatever I can do, I’ll do and it’s a credit to him.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

The Timo Werner signing is a no-brainer for Spurs. Either they get a cheap loan to provide cover for six months, or they end up unlocking his talent and get a bargain permanent deal in the summer.
