‘He suffered’ – National media criticises Tottenham defender after 1-0 loss

Pedro Porro had an outing to forget as Spain fell to a 1-0 loss to Colombia on Saturday, with the Spanish media ripping the Tottenham man to shreds after his display.

After an indifferent start to his Tottenham career following his move from Sporting Lisbon in January of last year, Porro has stepped up in a major way this campaign and has been one of the Lilywhites’ most consistent performers.

The 24-year-old has looked comfortably comfortable in the inverted role in Ange Postecoglou’s system, having managed eight assists so far this season in 25 league games (Transfermarkt).

What has been most impressive is his defensive improvement, with the Spaniard coping comfortably against some of the best wingers in the Premier League this season.

Pedro Porro struggles against Luis Diaz on Spain duty

However, that was seemingly not the case for Porro in Spain’s loss to Colombia at the London Stadium, with Liverpool winger Luiz Diaz getting the better of the Tottenham man.

The Spanish press were not too complimentary of the right-back’s defensive showing after La Roja fell to a shock defeat at the hands of the South American side.

Marca gave Porro a 5 out of 10 rating, writing: “He had not played for Spain since March 28, 2023 in a match against Scotland. Today he returned to the XI. He was encouraged to go on the attack as the minutes passed, and he hit a dangerous volley in the 69th minute. He suffered with Luis Diaz.”

Meanwhile, Sport gave the Spurs man a rating of just 3 out of 10 rating and wrote: “The Colombian star, Luis Díaz, took him head-on. In the first half, he had the collaboration of Vivian, but in the second the hole was bigger and led to the winning goal.”

It is not completely surprising that both Udogie and Porro have had relatively poor games for Italy and Spain respectively. Both players have now gotten used to the inverted role at Spurs and are perhaps having to re-adapt to the demands of a traditional full-back or wing-back role for their national sides.
