Graeme Souness has blasted Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg for not doing more to block N’Golo Kante’s shot that led to Chelsea’s second goal.

Tottenham dominated proceedings in the first half as they pressed high up the pitch and penned Chelsea back but the Lilywhites were not able to make their superiority count.

The game completely changed following N’Golo Kante’s introduction at the interval as the away side began the second half on the front foot.

Chelsea took the lead through a Thiago Silva header before Kante virtually sealed the result as his effort deflected off Eric Dier and found its way into the back of the net, with Hugo Lloris stranded.

Chelsea’s second goal sucked the life out of the atmosphere at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and took the wind out of the Spurs players’ sails.

From that point on, the game resembled a training ground exercise for Thomas Tuchel’s men, who added a third through Antonio Rudiger in injury time to rub salt into Tottenham’s wounds.

Souness blasted Hojbjerg for not closing down Kante for Chelsea’s second and allowing the Frenchman to shoot.

The Liverpool legend told Sky Sports: “Get out to the ball now! Kante had far too much time. These are basic things.

“If you are Hojbjerg and a central midfield player, there are certain things you do in a game which should happen on auto-pilot. ‘The ball has gone out, I’m back out, I’m not standing holding hands with Dier’. He was just walking out.

“Get out and engage Kante now! Run! Sprint!”

Spurs Web Opinion

Sometimes, I do get the feeling with Hojbjerg that he is more interested in making it seem as though he is working hard rather than actually putting in the hard yards.

Chelsea’s second goal was a prime example as there was no excuse for him to not get out to block Kante. Had Ndombele or Winks done the same, some Spurs fans on social media would have been up in arms.
