Head coach seems to question reported Tottenham target’s defensive work rate

Fiorentina head coach Beppe Iachini has revealed that he doesn’t feel Tottenham target Riccardo Sottil contributes enough defensively to his side’s cause.

Calcio Mercato reported a few weeks ago that Spurs have already sent a scout to cast an eye over Sottil this season ahead of a possible summer move for the youngster.

The 20-year-old has started getting more opportunities in the Fiorentina first team this season after impressing on loan at Pescara last campaign.

Although he is used predominantly on the left-hand side of midfield, the technically proficient youngster can also play on the right as well as in a central role.

Fiorentina are enduring a difficult season and currently find themselves hovering just above the drop zone.

La Viola are desperate for points going into the business end of the season and Iachini has chosen to overlook Sottil for the last couple of weeks.

When asked why the midfielder wasn’t playing, Iachini told Fiorentina’s website: “(Sottil) does less defensive work: that’s the reason. Now, only points are needed.”

That certainly isn’t a ringing endorsement of the player’s attitude and work rate by the Fiorentina manager. It’s safe to say that if Sottil finds Iachini to be too much of a taskmaster, then he will absolutely hate working under Mourinho as the Spurs boss is quite strict of the defensive shape he demands of his team out of possession.
