‘Head up’ – Some Spurs fans rally behind player after difficult evening

Some Spurs fans have rallied behind Jan Vertonghen after the defender looked completely distraught following his substitution.

Vertonghen, whose contract with Spurs runs out at the end of the season, was handed a rare start last night in the FA Cup fourth round replay against Southampton under the lights at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

However, he was replaced by Gedson Fernandes just ten minutes into the second half. Jose Mourinho admitted after the game that the change was tactical as he wanted to switch from a back three to a back four (Football.London).

The 32-year-old looked devastated to be taken off and cut a sorry figure on the bench. The defender has admitted previously that he wants to stay on at Spurs for as long as he can (The Guardian).

However, he has failed to establish himself in the team this season with Mourinho seemingly to prefer a partnership of Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez, with Japhet Tanganga’s emergence further complicating things for Vertonghen, who does not possess the same pace as his team-mates.

Some fans rallied behind the Belgian and insisted that he will always be a Spurs legend for what he has given the club over the years.

Spurs Web Opinion

It is extremely sad to see how poor Vertonghen now looks compared to a year ago. After his performance against Dortmund last year, I thought he had at least another two or three good years in him but his decline has been fairly rapid. I fear that if he doesn’t start performing right now, the club might not offer him a new deal in the summer.
